You’ve seen kids do it, screaming women do it, and even celebrities have poured freezing buckets of ice water over their heads in the name of charity. And now MarineMax is in on the action! Paul Cummings, the manager at MarineMax Pompano, has challenged his entire staff and three other MarineMax stores to the #ALSIceBucketChallenge. Since that time, numerous other stores have responded and accepted including MarineMax Clearwater, Buford and Cumming. Sea Ray Boats have even participated in a big way!
The #ALSIceBucketChallenge entails the party who has been challenged dumping a bucket of icy water on themselves, posting a video of it to a social media site, then nominating others to do the same in hopes of raising ALS awareness. Those people can then accept the challenge or make a donation to an ALS charity, or they can do both.
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), often referred to as “Lou Gehrig’s Disease,” is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. Motor neurons reach from the brain to the spinal cord and from the spinal cord to the muscles throughout the body. The progressive degeneration of the motor neurons in ALS eventually leads to their death. When the motor neurons die, the ability of the brain to initiate and control muscle movement is lost. With voluntary muscle action progressively affected, patients in the later stages of the disease may become totally paralyzed. (ALSA.org)
